BROOKLINE, Mass. -- On Sunday (Aug. 27) the Michigan field hockey team traveled to Parsons Field, the site where the Wolverines finished runner-up to Maryland in the 1999 NCAA championship game. This time, however, it was a different story as Michigan scored five goals in the second half to win 5-2 over host Northeastern.
After a scoreless first half, senior Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon HS), who tied the U-M record for assists in a season (22) in 1999, led the way for the Maize and Blue with three points, scoring the team's first goal and adding two assists later in the game.
Reid's goal came with 32:55 left in the second half and was unassisted. Five and a half minutes later, freshman April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) scored on an assist by senior Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS). Gannon's sister, freshman Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), got her first career goal, on a penalty corner at 15:19, to give Michigan a 3-0 lead.
After a Northeastern goal, sophomore Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) gave the Wolverines back their three-goal lead. Senior Regan Wulfsberg (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown HS) finished off the Huskies with the fifth and final goal for U-M at 2:53. Northeastern (0-1) scored with no time left of the clock for the final margin.
Freshman Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) made her first appearance in goal for Michigan and had three saves.
The Wolverines, 2-0 on the season, play next weekend in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in St. Louis, Mo., facing North Carolina (Sunday, Sept. 3) and Duke (Monday, Sept. 4). Both games begin at noon CDT.
