Proceeds from the eighth annual event go directly into the Millie Schembechler Adrenal Cancer Research Fund at the University of Michigan Cancer Center. Over $4 million has been donated to the fund and nearly $2 million has been raised as a result of only seven tournaments. Chairman Bo Schembechler, whose wife Millie died from adrenal cancer in August 1992, hopes to turn over $5 million to the Comprehensive Cancer Center by the end of the year.
"We are pleased about the turnout and support we have been able to generate for the fund," Schembechler said. "Our goal is to make the University of Michigan Cancer Center the adrenal cancer research center for the world. Still, there is no effective treatment for patients with adrenal cancer. Hopefully, the donations will help develop new treatments and a better understanding of this disease.
"I want to personally thank everyone who has been a part of this drive the past eight years," added Schembechler. "We have had tremendous support from over 200 volunteers as well as our loyal group of celebrities and, of course, the golfers who have given their money and time to build this foundation of success."
The golf classic includes some 40 to 50 celebrities and entertainers from the University of Michigan, the Detroit area and nationally. A who's who of all-time Michigan football greats -- including former U-M All-Americans Anthony Carter, Dan Dierdorf, Bump Elliott, Pete Elliott, Rick Leach, Jim Mandich, Ron Johnson and Mike Kenn -- will join Academic All-America quarterback John Wangler and former All-Big Ten honorees Tom Goss and Dennis Franklin on the course.
Current members of the Michigan Athletic Department staff participating are football coach Lloyd Carr, ice hockey coach Red Berenson and Interim Athletic Director Bill Martin. The Michigan radio tandem of Frank Beckmann and former U-M football great Jim Brandstatter will also play in the day's event.
The Detroit professional teams will be well represented with former Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson and ex-players Mickey Stanley and Dave Bergman, former Detroit Piston guard Isiah Thomas, former Detroit Lion Joe Schmidt and current Detroit Red Wings defenseman Aaron Ward participating in the event.
Some of the other big names slated to appear at the golf classic are actor Jeff Daniels, Michigan Governor John Engler, Indiana football coach Cam Cameron, college football personality Lee Corso, former U-M and pro golfer Elaine Crosby, LPGA player Jen Brody, golf teaching professional Rick Smith, Western Kentucky football coach and former U-M assistant coach Jack Harbaugh, former Indiana football coach Bill Mallory, WXYZ-TV sports director Don Shane, WJR's Paul W. Smith, ABC football announcer Lynn Swann, NFL Hall of Famer Paul Warfield, Vanderbilt football coach Woody Widenhofer, golf course architect Arthur Hills, former Indiana great and Detroit Lion Tom Nowatzke, and three-time All-America and former Northwestern and U-M assistant football coach Alex Agase.
Tickets for the golf classic are $10 each ($5 for children under 14) and will be available at the University of Michigan Golf Course on the day of the event. In addition to watching the players participating in the golf classic, a silent auction of sports memorabilia will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the U-M Golf Course Clubhouse. Spectators can park in the overflow portion of Crisler Arena (east of Crisler Arena and next to the railroad tracks).
All proceeds from the event benefit the Millie Schembechler Adrenal Cancer Research Fund.
