WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team dropped four positions after the third round of the Big Ten Conference Championship today (Saturday, May 6) at Purdue University's Kampen Course to sit tied for sixth with intrastate rival Michigan State.
The Wolverines opened the second round carding a 299 and maintained their hold on second place, but a 311 team total in the third round dropped them to the sixth position with the Spartans. Through 54 holes, the Wolverines have a championship total of 902.
Senior and defending Big Ten co-medalist Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) remained steady as he sits in third with a 54-hole total of 218. He opened Day 2 with a 73 and finished with a 75 to remain five strokes behind the championship leaders Luke Donald and Jess Daley of Northwestern.
Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS), who opened the championship with a 67 on Friday, fell 10 positions in the second and third rounds after firing a 75 and 82 on Day 2. He is tied for 12th. Senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) and sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) are both tied for 35th. Affeldt carded rounds of 76-78 on Day 2, while Chapman fired a 75 and 78. Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS) sits in a tie for 38th after carding rounds of 76 and 80.
Northwestern extended its lead to 27 strokes as the Wildcats fired a 286 second round and a 303 third for a total of 870. Penn State jumped from 11th place to a tie for second after the second day, carding scores of 291 and 295 for an 897 total. The Nittany Lions share second with host Purdue.
Northwestern's Donald and Daley share the championship lead as they both have carded totals of 213 through 54 holes. Donald fired just the fourth round under 70 strokes as he collected a 68 in the second round. He followed it with a 73. Daley fired a 70 in the second round and a 77 in the third.
Michigan will close out the battle with the conference as the Big Ten Championship concludes Sunday (May 7) with 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. CDT.
