VICTORIA, Texas -- After a half-hour thunderstorm delay, the University of Michigan men's golf team fired some lightning of its own in the final round of the 2000 NCAA Central Regional Championship. The Wolverines fired their third best tournament total of the season with a one-under-par 283 team score in the final round at the Victoria Country Club on Saturday (May 20).
Despite the strong final round, the Wolverines did not crack the top nine as they finished in a tie for 11th, along with Mississippi, with an 866 final team total. The top nine teams qualified for the NCAA Championship (May 31-June 3) in Opelika, Ala.
Senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) closed out his Michigan career leading the Wolverines again as he came back with his strongest round of the regional, carding a 68. He finished the championship with a 214 total after back-to-back 73s in the opening two rounds and finished tied for 21st overall.
"We gave it a shot, but the competition here is so, so tough," said U-M head coach Jim Carras. "Our kids are down, but again the teams here are no slouches. I am very proud of our performance here and all season long. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot on the first day, but got better and better with each round. That's all you can ask for. It's sad we had to end it this way with such a great final round, but a few breaks here and there would have and could have changed some things, but you can't use that as an excuse. You simply just can't have a bad round against this caliber of competition. But again, I am just so proud of our team."
Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) shot a one-under-par 70 in the final round to give him a 218 championship total, which put him in a tie for 44th. He had rounds of 72 and 76 on the first two days. Junior/sophomore Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) continued his stellar and consistent regional play as he fired a 73 to finish tied for 54th with a 219 regional total.
Senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) closed out the regional with a final-round 72 to give him a 220 championship finish and a tie for 60th. Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS) finished the regional tied for 99th with a 225 championship total after firing a 75 on the final day.
Texas rallied with a 12-under-par final round to win the Central Regional Championship with an 847 final team total. Kent followed with its strong final round of 11-under to finish as the runnerup at 849. Kent's Jon Mills won the overall individual trophy after a final-round 65 gave him a 202 regional finish.
