Michigan Women's Tennis Edged 4-3 by Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team suffered a close 4-3 defeat against Purdue on Saturday afternoon (April 8) at the Lafayette Sports Center. The Wolverines (7-8) dropped to 1-4 in Big Ten Conference play, while Purdue (7-8) improved to 2-4 in conference action.

Purdue gained the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, with Michigan senior co-captain Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and freshman Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) halting the attempted doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at the No. 2 spot.

The Wolverines and Boilermakers split the six singles matches to provide Purdue with the final 4-3 margin of victory. Michigan senior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) beat Shannon Taheny in straight sets at No. 2 (6-2, 6-4), junior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gymnazium) claimed a three-set win over Erika Quebe at No. 3 (7-6, 6-7, 2-1 retired), and freshman Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) defeated Melissa Igbal at the No. 4 spot (7-5, 6-3) to claim the Wolverine victories. The Boilermakers won matches at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 spots, with Jennifer Embry beating Brooke Hart at the top spot (6-3, 7-6).

Michigan returns to the court tomorrow (Sunday, April 9, 11 a.m. CDT) against Indiana at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind.

Joanne Musgrove's singles win over Melissa Igbal at the No. 4 spot was her 15th of the season (15-11 overall record). Musgrove has an 8-7 dual match record during her initial campaign (3-2 at No. 3 and 5-5 at No. 4).

Danielle Lund won her fifth consecutive singles match with her 6-2, 6-4 win over Shannon Taheny at the No. 2 spot. Lund has a 9-2 dual match record (all at No. 2) and has tallied a 14-6 overall record this season.
