ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan freshman Jen Duprez overcame a first-set loss to post a three-set win and propel the Wolverines to a 4-3 victory against Wisconsin on Thursday (April 27) in the first round of the 2000 Big Ten Conference Women's Tennis Championship. The host Wolverines advance to the quarterfinals on Friday morning (April 28, 10 a.m.) against No. 1 seed Ohio State at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Wisconsin opened the Big Ten Championship by taking the doubles point with commanding wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots (No. 3 doubles was abandoned with the Badgers' victories). Wisconsin's April Gabler and Lara Vojnov posted an 8-1 victory over Brooke Hart and Jen Duprez at No. 1, and Katie Dougherty and Linde Mues beat Danielle Lund and Szandra Fuzesi by an 8-2 score at No. 2.
Trailing 1-0 in the match, U-M captured four of the six singles matches in posting the comeback win. Michigan's Hart opened play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gabler at No. 1 singles, while Joanne Musgrove posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 and Erryn Weggenman claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6. Wisconsin's Shana McElroy tallied a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 3 and Vanessa Rauh recorded a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to knot the match score at 3-3. The match came down to a battle at No. 4 singles between Duprez and Wisconsin's Mues. Mues won the first set (6-4), before Duprez came back and won the final two sets (6-3, 6-4).
Michigan (10-11) advances to the quarterfinals of the tournament tomorrow, while Wisconsin concluded the season with a 7-16 record.
