U-M Falls to Ohio State in Regular-Season Finale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (April 23), losing the regular-season finale at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (9-11) finished the Big Ten Conference dual match season with a 3-7 record, while Ohio State (16-6) claimed at least a share of the conference regular-season title with a 9-1 mark.

Ohio State earned the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spot, while Michigan gained an 8-6 victory from senior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) and junior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) at No. 2. The Wolverines nearly won the doubles point as senior Erryn Weggenman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and freshman Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) sent the match at No. 3 into a tie-break. Weggenman and Musgrove lost 7-4 in the tie-break (9-8 match score) to Michelle Matko and Claudia Castro.

The Wolverines were unable to pull through with the necessary four points required to win the match, losing a pair of straight-set matches and two three-set contests to the Buckeyes. Michigan gained its team points as freshman Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton HS) posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sadhaf Pervez at No. 4, and Weggenman defeated Taryn Bowen by a 7-5, 6-4 score at No. 6. Lund lost to Monica Rincon at No. 2 (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) and Musgrove suffered a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 setback to Laura Maloney at No. 5 in the two three-set matches that provided the Buckeyes with the margin of victory.

Michigan awaits seeding for the this week's 2000 Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship, to be held Thursday through Sunday (April 27-30) at the Varsity Tennis Center. This will be the first time that Michigan has hosted the conference championship tournament.
