ST. LOUIS -- University of Michigan senior Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood HS) concluded a storied collegiate wrestling career with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships on Saturday (March 18) at the Kiel Center. Warren's efforts, along with All-America runs by 141-pounder Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph Regional HS) and heavyweight Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS), helped the Wolverines finish in 13th place (38 points).
Warren, the No. 4 seed, earned his third-place finish by dominating his final two matches in the consolation rounds, defeating Nebraska's No. 7 Todd Beckerman 12-4 and Pittsburgh's 10th-seeded Rob Loper 7-3. The victories were the 103rd and 104th of the Warren's career, tying him for 15th place on Michigan's all-time win list with Mike Amine (1984-89).
"I'm happy with my performances today," Warren said. "I went out and dominated. It was my last match in college so it's nice to go out with a win. The national championship was my goal, but when that couldn't be accomplished, my next objective was third place."
Logan and Brink lost their fifth- and seventh-place matches, respectively, but still boasted 4-3 records at the meet to gain All-America status.
"The team came down here and competed hard," said head coach Joe McFarland. "I applaud All-Americans Joe Warren, Damion Logan and Matt Brink for their individual successes. It's a great honor for these student-athletes."
