ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated St. Lawrence 6-2 Saturday night (Dec. 9) in front of 6,352 fans at Yost Ice Arena. Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) paced the Wolverines with his first career hat trick, scoring a goal in each of the three periods and extending his scoring streak to nine consecutive games.
Hilbert's first goal put the Wolverines ahead 1-0 with 5:30 left in the first period. Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H) passed the puck to Hilbert at the blue line and he then skated up the middle of zone and took a shot that beat St. Lawrence netminder Sean Coakley above his blocker. Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) also picked up an assist on Hilbert's goal, extending his scoring streak to eight games.
Michigan (13-3-3) put the Saints away for good with three goals in a span of 1:46 midway through the second period. Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) scored the first of the three after driving hard to the net and squeezing the puck through Coakley's five-hole. Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) scored 25 seconds later with a shot from the right face-off circle. Just over a minute later, Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) slid a perfect pass across the slot past St. Lawrence defenseman Tony Maci to Hilbert, who one-timed the puck from the right circle past Coakley to give Michigan a 4-0 lead.
St. Lawrence (3-7-3) found the net late in the second period when Alan Fyfe slapped a loose puck out from behind the Michigan net to Russ Bartlett, who was skating through the slot and beat Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.).
The Wolverines carried a 4-1 lead into the third period before Hilbert struck again. Just eight seconds into the period Hilbert picked up a loose puck at the St. Lawrence blue line, skated between the circles and rifled a shot inside the top corner of the net to give Michigan a 5-1 lead. His three goals give him 12 multi-point games of the 15 games in which he has scored. The hat trick was the first by a Wolverine since Mike Comrie scored three goals at Notre Dame Oct. 8, 1999.
Bartlett scored again for the Saints in the third period to make the score 5-2 before Trainor tallied his first goal of the season after picking up the puck deep in the offensive zone. Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) and Jay Vancik (Medina, Ohio) picked up assists on the play.
Coakley finished the game with 34 saves and suffered the loss, dropping his record to 0-4-3 on the season. Blackburn picked up the win, making 23 saves and improving his record to 12-3-3 before being relieved by L.J. Scarpace (Dearborn, Mich.) midway through the third period. Scarpace added three saves before giving way to Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.), who played the final 4:47 of the third period and made two saves.
The Wolverines return to action Tuesday (Dec. 12) in an exhibition contest when they host the U.S. National Team Developmental Program at Yost Ice Arena starting at 7:05 p.m.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the win ... "I thought our team had a strong game last night and had a good game tonight. I can't tell you we played as well as we did last night, but I think the opponent had something to do with that, too. This (winning back-to-back games) is good for our team. We got more players involved in everything offensively and defensively, and you saw a little bit of that in the scoring. We're playing better as a team, and this is something to build on in the second half [of the season]."
On the three-goal flurry in the second period ... "To be honest, we weren't playing well at the time. In that stretch, we were on our heels and St. Lawrence was taking it to us. Then we got a couple of breaks and -- bang, bang, bang -- the puck went in, and that changed the whole game."
Sophomore Forward Andy Hilbert
On his hat trick ... "It was nice to get it at home. The puck seemed to be going in tonight. I finally hit the net a few times instead of missing it."
On his line ... "It's been great chemistry. Geoff (Koch) is a great forechecker and Mike (Cammalleri) can get the puck in the right spots and score goals. They're both great hockey players, and we complement each other very well. We have great chemistry together, and we just have to keep it going."
Senior Forward Bill Trainor
On his goal ... "It was kind of a broken play. I happened to come up on the right side and the puck came to my stick. I just wanted to shoot it on net. I'd gotten my chances all game, but they just wouldn't go in. I was fortunate to get it over the goalie's shoulder."
On the team's momentum ... "These past few weekends have been big. I think we topped it off pretty well this weekend. It gives us some confidence going into the Great Lakes Invitational, something we haven't won in a while. I think we're pretty happy with the way we played this weekend."
