ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated the U.S. National Team Developmental Program's Under-18 Team 4-2 tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 12) in an exhibition game at Yost Ice Arena. Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored twice to lead the way for the Wolverines, while J.J. Swistak (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) added unassisted goals for Michigan.
Langfeld opened the scoring for Michigan with a power-play goal 4:22 into the game. It was his first goal since the second game against Miami (Oct. 28). Langfeld, stationed on the right side of the net, scored after receiving a Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) pass from across the crease.
Swistak extended Michigan's lead just under two minutes later with a short-handed, unassisted goal at the 6:16 mark of the first period. After picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone, he skated in on the right side of the slot. Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) was on the left side waiting for a pass, and after the defender committed to Koch, Swistak fired the puck over the goaltender's glove.
With a two-goal lead, Michigan netminder Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) left the game, as he has been ill for the last few days and needed extra rest heading into final exams. Backup goaltender L.J. Scarpace (Dearborn, Mich.) took over between the pipes.
Just 36 seconds into Scarpace's time in net, USA's Ryan Murphy scored to put the NTDP on the board. However, Langfeld gave Michigan a 3-1 lead after netting his second goal, with just under seven minutes left in the period. Stationed on the left side, Koch fed Langfeld for the eventual game-winning goal.
After a scoreless second period, Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) entered the game in net for the final period. Seven minutes into the third, Ortmeyer extended Michigan's lead to 4-1 with the second unassisted goal of the game. With John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) in the penalty box for high sticking, USA closed out the scoring with just 1:39 left to play as Rob Flynn beat O'Malley to make the final score 4-2.
Wolverine netminders combined to stop 19 or 21 shots by the NTDP. In net for USA, Travis Weber stopped 19 Michigan shots.
Michigan returns to action on Dec. 29 when the Wolverines face Michigan Tech at Joe Louis Arena in the Great Lakes Invitational. The game is slated for a 7:35 p.m. start. The following evening (Dec. 30), Michigan will play either No. 1 Michigan State or No. 2 Boston College.
