Wolverines Battle to 2-2 Tie at Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- For the third time in the last four games against Northern Michigan, the University of Michigan ice hockey team left with a tie against the Wildcats. The fifth-ranked Wolverines took a one-goal lead twice in the game, but allowed NMU to come back each time on Saturday (Dec. 2) in front of 3,804 fans at the Berry Events Center.
For the Wolverines, sophomores Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) each scored in the game, extending their scoring streaks to six games and seven games, respectively. Hilbert now has six goals and seven assists for 13 points in the last seven games, while Cammalleri has eight goals and five assists for 13 points in the last six games, the longest scoring streak of his career.
Michigan (11-3-3, 7-3-1 CCHA) found the net first with a goal by Cammalleri eight minutes into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. After winning a faceoff in the right circle, the puck went back to Hilbert at the point. He fired the puck at the net, where Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) deflected it to Cammalleri for the goal from the left side of the slot.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Wildcats (7-5-5, 5-5-4 CCHA) returned the favor 49 seconds later when Mike Stetzel fired a shot through Josh Blackburn's (Choctaw, Okla.) five-hole from the right face-off circle. That capped the scoring for the period, sending the teams to the locker room tied 1-1.
In the second set of traded goals, Michigan found the net for the lead prior to the Wildcats tying the score. For the Wolverines, Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) fired a shot from the right of the slot which created a huge rebound to the right face-off circle where a waiting Hilbert fired the puck into the back of the net.
Again the Wildcats tied the game shortly after the Michigan goal. From the slot, Marquette native Chris Gobert fired the second NMU goal from the slot to tie the game at 2-2 with 8:25 left in regulation.
Despite a flurry of shots by both teams and late power-play chances, neither team found the net in the remainder of the third period or the five-minute overtime.
Blackburn made 24 saves, including numerous outstanding stops, to earn his 11th win of the season. NMU's Ragusett stopped 29 shots in the loss.
The Wolverines return home to host 2000 Frozen Four participant St. Lawrence next weekend (Dec. 8-9) at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan faces the Eastern College Athletic Conference opponent at 7:35 p.m. on Friday and 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. U-M then closes out the fall portion of the schedule when the U.S. National Team Development Program, which is based in Ann Arbor, travels across town to play at Yost Ice Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 7:05 p.m.
