Maize Overtakes Blue in Annual Intrasquad Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team kicked off its 2000-01 campaign with the annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad Meet on Thursday (Dec. 14) at Cliff Keen Arena. In a closely fought battle, the Maize squad edged out the Blue team 156.40-155.40.
Leading the way for the Maize team was sophomore Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS), who took second in the all-around (52.10), winning vault (9.00) and high bar (9.10). He also finished second on the floor exercise (8.90) and third on the pommel horse (8.50).
Senior tri-captain Kevin Roulston (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township HS) of the Blue team captured the all-around title, finishing with a total score of 52.30. Roulston took home a first-place honor on the floor exercise (9.10) and second-place honors on the vault (8.90) and high bar (9.00).
Competing for the Blue team, junior Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) won three individual event titles. The 2000 Big Ten Conference Gymnast of the Year garnered first-place finishes on the pommel horse (9.30), still rings (9.30) and parallel bars (9.20).
The Maize team also received a first-place honor on the pommel horse from senior tri-captain Tim Dehr (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS). Dehr tied for the top spot with Vetere, scoring a 9.30.
The Wolverines will open their season at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill., on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. CST.
