Michigan Wins Windy City Invitational for First Time

CHICAGO -- Led by senior tri-captain Tim Dehr (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS) and junior Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS), the top-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics squad took home the team championship from the Windy City Invitational, hosted by the University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday (Jan. 13). It marked Michigan's first title in the 31-year history of the event.
In a meet involving seven schools ranked in the preseason top 15, the Wolverines scored a 207.550 to finish .350 ahead of No. 8 Illinois (207.200) in second place and 2.150 ahead of No. 2 Ohio State (205.400) in third. Rounding out the standings were No. 6 Iowa (205.150), No. 12 Minnesota (202.250), No. 10 Michigan State (201.350) and No. 14 Illinois-Chicago (196.250).
Dehr captured first-place honors on the parallel bars with an 8.800 and second place on the pommel horse (9.200), while Vetere finished tied for top honors on the still rings (9.150), second on parallel bars (8.750) and fifth on the horizontal bar (8.800).
Junior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) finished in the top 10 on three events, including a third-place finish on still rings and an eighth-place showing on the vault. Senior tri-captain Kevin Roulston (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township HS) was the lone Wolverine to compete in the all-around and he finished with a 49.650, including a second-place finish on the floor exercise and fifth place on the pommel horse.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend in their home opener when they host Ohio State on Saturday (Jan. 20) at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
