11/8/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) found the net for the second time 3:42 into the second overtime to give the No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team a 4-3 win over Miami University on Wednesday (Nov. 8) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the U-M Soccer Field.
The Wolverines got on the board at 15:23, when senior midfielder Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) caught a cross pass from senior forward Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) and slid the ball past Miami defenders and goalkeeper Laura Degelleke. The goal gave Michigan a 1-0 lead, which it took into halftime.
Less than three minutes into the second half, at 48:47, Miami's Julie Grosso put the ball in the net behind Michigan senior netminder Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS), tying the score at one.
Michigan went ahead again off a corner kick from sophomore Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS). Kayal's pass crossed in front of the net and was put into the goal by sophomore midfielder Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS). Peterson hit her first goal of the season at 62:40.
Miami answered again, this time on an unassisted goal from Danielle Altiero at 68:58. The Wolverines battled to retake the lead and at 76:57, Chavez took a drive pass from freshman midfielder Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS) and tucked the ball behind Degelleke.
Miami tied things up at 87:57 off an unassisted goal by Danielle Berkemeier. Taking a 3-3 tie into the first overtime, the Wolverines and RedHawks battled back and forth, spending much of the first extra 15 minutes at midfield.
At 108:42, Chavez found her way past the keeper for the second time, giving the Wolverines a 4-3 win over the Mid-American Conference Tournament champion RedHawks. Chavez scored of a pass from Beitel for her eighth goal of her freshman season.
Stewart made five saves in the game, bringing her season record to 8-6-1. Her diving save in the first-sudden death overtime proved to be a game-saving grab.
With the win, the Wolverines (13-8-1) will advance to the NCAA second round to face No. 1 seed and undefeated Notre Dame (20-0-1) on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field in South Bend, Ind. The Fighting Irish beat Michigan 5-1 two weeks ago (Oct. 24) in Ann Arbor

Q U O T E S
Miami Head Coach Bobby Kramig
On playing in the NCAA Tournament ... "This was a tremendous game, and a positive experience for our players."
On the difference in the game ... "I thought we were going to win in the overtime -- absolutely convinced. I felt we were a little more fit and able to run at [Michigan] with the ball. Michigan is physically imposing, big and speedy. We struggled with the balls sent in from the flank. At the end of the game I thought we had them, and I was disappointed."
Miami Sophomore Forward Danielle Berkemeier
On the sudden-victory overtime ... "We didn't have the pressure on us; it was on Michigan. We just wanted to give our all, and I think we did."
On the team's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance ... "A lot of people were nervous at the start and early in the game. Once we got going and got into the flow, we began to play our game and the nervousness was gone."
Miami Senior Midfielder Katie Barth
On Miami's resiliency ... "This team has a lot of heart. We don't give up, and that characteristic came through today. I felt we were able to play with Michigan."
On the meaning of the double-overtime game to the Miami program ... "I think we earned respect for our team by the way we played today, something that this team has deserved this season."
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Belkin Rademacher
On surviving the overtimes ... "We didn't make the win easy for ourselves. I felt we had the game in hand and let it go -- we let Miami back in the game and made it difficult on ourselves."
On Miami's comebacks ... "Every time we got ahead there was a letdown on our side. Fatigue played a part in that, but Miami is a team that was well-organized and well-coached."
On the goalkeeping of Carissa Stewart ... "Carissa was solid in goal for us. The goals Miami scored were the result of defensive breakdowns and were pretty unstoppable."
On facing No. 1 seed Notre Dame on Sunday ... "We go into the game having nothing to lose as the underdogs against the tournament's top-seeded team. Notre Dame is a good, experienced team, and maybe they are ripe for an upset.
"We have been able to find ways to win. We will need to focus and play confidently with aggressiveness. We have seen Notre Dame once this season and know better what to expect."
"I am glad we don't play until Sunday -- the extra day off after all the long Big Ten Tournament games and this double overtime game will do a lot for us."
Michigan Senior Midfielder/Forward Kacy Beitel
On the play of Stephanie Chavez ... "Stephanie came in and helped us get the spark on attack. We needed someone to be aggressive and get us back in the game."
On setting up the game-winning goal ... "The ball was played in the box close to the goalie. I was able to jump in front and deflect the ball clear and get it to Stephanie (Chavez). She finished it out."
On playing her final home game for Michigan ... "Playing today's game, the last one at home, was pretty emotional. It wasn't a pretty game, but we came away with the victory and that made it special."
Michigan Freshman Forward Stephanie Chavez
On scoring the game-winning goal ... "The offense worked well and created chances -- I just put the ball in."
