Wolverine Grapplers Dominate Eastern Michigan Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Competing unattached, University of Michigan wrestlers dominated the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 4), taking eight of the 10 individual weight class championships. No. 1 ranked Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) captured the 174-pound title and reached 100 victories in his career.
Olson, wrestling for the first time since a season-ending knee injury at the Virginia Duals on Jan. 8, 2000, started off right where he left off last year. The top-ranked 174-pounder rattled off four wins on the way to his second consecutive EMU Open crown. Olson had a stiff challenge in the final, taking a 5-4 decision over fourth-ranked Mike Feeney of Eastern Michigan. The victory pushed Olson's career total to 101, making him the 18th member of Michigan 100-victory club.
"I was pumped up from the start and real aggressive and anxious in the first match," said Olson. "It's a real honor for me to get the 100 wins; that was one goal I have had. This tournament kind of shows me where I am right now. I'm glad I faced a guy like Feeney in the finals."
Besides Olson, seven other Michigan grapplers took individual titles. All-American Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS), ranked No. 2 at heavyweight, breezed by his competition as he recorded two major decisions and one fall on the way to his second straight EMU title.
Also taking their respective weight classes were ninth-ranked A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) at 125, 133-pounder Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./Peddie School), Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS) at 141, freshman Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) in the 157 division, Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) at 165, and 14th-ranked senior 197-pounder Joe Degain (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston HS).
The Wolverines will have two weeks off before they compete unattached at the Michigan State Open on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 18-19) in East Lansing, Mich.
