This Weekend
The 11th-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team heads to Austin, Texas, this weekend (Friday-Sunday, Dec. 1-3) for the Texas Invitational at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The preliminaries are at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and move to 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Only the swimmers will be in Texas.
Divers Amanda Crews (Champaign, Ill./Central HS), Theresa DeSitter (Lisle, Ill./Aurora Rosary HS) Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown HS), Lindsey McElroy (Columbia, Mo./Oakland Mills HS) Kelly Vander Kuyl (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS); and swimmers Kathleen Gilbert (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS), Gwen Weingart (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hawken HS), Heather DeHainaut (Vineland, N.J./Vineland HS) and Maya Mandel (Netanya, Israel/Eldad HS) will compete at the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Jones Natatorium in Ypsilanti, Mich.
The Competition
The Texas Invitational will be a team scored event against some top-notch competition. Competing at the Invitational will be No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 California, No. 10 Texas, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 14 Southern Methodist, No. 16 Arizona State, No. 18 Minnesota, No. 22 Nebraska, Harvard, Rice and Texas Christian. Wolverines Split
Michigan split a double-dual meet against then-No. 11 Texas and Michigan State on Friday (Nov. 17) at Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines cruised to victory against the Spartans (202-91) and dropped a 168-132 decision to the Longhorns.
Earning first-place performances were Julie Kern (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:04.73, Traci Valasco (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.17, Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing in 1:05.93, Emily Fenn (Westport, Conn./Gardner HS) with a time of 4:58.20 in the 500-yard freestyle, and Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:01.87.
Arsenault Will Attend
Freshman sensation Samantha Arsenault (Peabody, Mass./Gardner HS) did not compete against Texas and Michigan State on Nov. 17-18 because of soreness. Arsenault is expected to the make the trip to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational.
Diving Marks
Kelly Vander Kuyl (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) was victorious in the platform diving against Texas with a score of 393.30, which qualified her for the NCAA Diving Zones. Vander Kuyl surpassed the qualifying standard by 27.70 points.
Speedo America's CSCAA Coaches Poll
Michigan dropped two spots to 11th in the most recent CSCAA Coaches Poll (Nov. 16). Jumping up 10 spots to the No. 1 position was UCLA. Four teams in the poll received first-place votes and only two teams stayed in their same slot -- Tennessee (23) and Maryland (24). The poll comes out every two weeks of competition and the next poll will be released on Nov. 30, 2000.
