CHAMPAIGN, Ill. C Freshman Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS) found the net twice in the second half to give the No. 3-seeded University of Michigan women's soccer team a 2-0 win over No. 6 seed University of Iowa in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 2) at First and Stadium Field.
The Wolverines, defending Big Ten Tournament champions, had many scoring chances during the first half. Sophomore forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) had two shots that narrowly missed the goal by hitting the post. While Michigan outshot the Hawkeyes 13-2 during the first 45 minutes of play, it was the Iowa defense that stopped the Wolverines from registering a goal.
The back-and-forth game remained scoreless until the 65:37 mark, when Wilson found the net off a pass from senior midfielder Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS). Michigan remained tight on the ball, giving Iowa only 10 shots in the entire game.
With one minute remaining in the game, Wilson caught the ball off a corner kick by sophomore defender Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS). The goal gave Michigan its second win of the season over the Hawkeyes and advanced the Wolverines to the semifinals.
Wilson booted her eighth and ninth goals of the season, making her the team's leading goal scorer and second on the team in points (22).
The Wolverines will compete Friday night (Nov. 3) against No. 2 seed University of Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m. CST at the Illini Soccer Field. The Badgers needed a shootout to get past Purdue in the first round, prevailing 5-3 in the shootout after the teams were tied 2-2 after 120 minutes of play.
