U-M Wins Continental Airlines Classic on Final Race

HOUSTON, Texas -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team won the 2000 Continental Airlines Classic Friday (Nov. 10) by little more than a finger nail over No. 22 Big Ten Conference rival Penn State and No. 2-ranked California at Rice University. Michigan finished with a final team total of 209 to Penn State's runner-up finish of 206. Cal finished third with 205, followed by Rice (177), Illinois (162) and Missouri (140).
In the final race, Michigan freshman Samantha Arsenault (Peabody, Mass./Gardner HS) touched out Penn State's Haley Cope in the 400-yard freestyle relay by one one-hundreth of a second to win the event and the Classic. Michigan's relay team of Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS), Melissa Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School), Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) and Arsenault finished first in 3:25.64, shattering the Rice Pool record of 3:27.67 set by SMU in January 2000. Penn State finished second with a time of 3:25.65.
Arsenault also reset the Rice Pool record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:50.58, breaking the old mark of 4:51.75 set by SMU's Naoko Imoto in January 2000, and she was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.00).
Crisman also picked up a victory in the 50-yard freestyle (23.80) and was second in the 100-yard freestyle (51.81). Erin Abbey (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield HS) won Race B of the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.63 and Emily Fenn (Westport, Conn./Gardner HS) won Race B of the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.63)
There were 11 events in the meet, including two relays. Eight of the nine individual events had two separate races that each involved one swimmer from each of the six schools. The "A" race was more heavily weighted than the "B" race in the team scoring.
The same six teams will meet up again Saturday (Nov. 11) in the Rice Invitational starting at 10 a.m. at Rice Pool.
