Pilja First, U-M Runner-Up at Murray Keatinge Invitational

ORONO, Maine -- Junior Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./North HS) became the sixth straight Wolverine to win the individual title at the Murray Keatinge Invitational as he led Michigan men's cross country team to a runner-up team finish on Saturday (Oct. 7).
Pilja, who won his second straight individual title of the season, finished over 13 seconds ahead of the pack (23:43.7), while freshman teammates John Hughes (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) and Tom Greenless (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) joined him in the top 10 with sixth- and eighth-place finishes, respectively.
Michigan was looking to win its fourth straight team title at the event hosted by the University of Maine, but with 38 points was edged out by Nebraska (31) to finish second overall. Nebraska had five runners place in the top 10.
Michigan's next meet is the Wolverine Interregional next Sunday (Oct. 15) at the U-M Golf Course. The 8,000-meter men's race is scheduled for 11 a.m. following the 10:30 a.m. women's race.
