U-M Completes Weekend Series Sweep of RedHawks
10/28/2000 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
defeated Miami (Ohio) 6-2 Saturday night (Oct. 28) in front of 6,359 fans at Yost Ice Arena to sweep the weekend series with the RedHawks. U-M displayed a balanced offensive attack which saw eight different players record points on the night. Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) and Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) each scored a goal and added two assists to pace the Wolverines.
After Miami (1-4-1, 0-2-0 CCHA) rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the game early in the third period, Jay Vancik (Medina, Ohio) notched the game-winning goal 8:50 into the third period. With U-M on the power play, Vancik took a shot from the left point which beat RedHawk netminder David Burleigh to give the Wolverines a 3-2 lead.
Hilbert's fourth goal of the season, at the 12:23 mark of the third period, gave the Wolverines their second two-goal cushion of the contest. After taking a pass from Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.), Hilbert skated around Miami defenseman Matt Medvecz and beat Burleigh to put the Wolverines ahead 4-2.
Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) and Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) each added empty-net goals late in the third period to round out the scoring. Komisarek finished the weekend with two goals and an assist against the RedHawks.
Michigan (6-0-2, 4-0-0 CCHA) opened the scoring late in the first period when Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) slapped a loose puck past Burleigh to put the Wolverines ahead 1-0. Langfeld's power-play goal at the 2:02 mark of the second period gave Michigan a two-goal lead.
The RedHawks cut the Michigan lead to 2-1 late in the second period when Mike Kompon's shot from inside the blue line beat Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.). Miami tied the contest early in the third period when Jason Deskin's backhand shot found the back of the net.
For the second consecutive night, Michigan turned in a strong performance on special teams. The Wolverines converted three of 10 power-play opportunities and held the RedHawks to just six shots on their four power-play opportunities.
Blackburn left the game at the start of the third period as the result of a shoulder injury he sustained after being slammed into the crossbar late in the second period. Prior to giving way to L.J. Scarpace (Dearborn, Mich.), Blackburn made 15 saves in the first two periods. Scarpace stopped seven shots in the third period and picked up the win to improve his record to 1-0-0 on the season. Burleigh stopped 33 Wolverine shots before being pulled in favor of an extra attacker with 1:16 remaining in the third period.
The Wolverines host intrastate rival Michigan State on Saturday (Nov. 4) at Yost Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear yellow in support of the second annual Maize Out. Bank One will provide maize shirts for the first 1,000 fans.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the team's improvement ... "Our team is still learning. We're a long way from our best. We found a way to win and that's what's important. It's a coach's job to keep the team honest and working hard."
On the game ... "It was an exhausting game, both physically and mentally. Sometimes the way we played was good, sometimes it was bad. It was not a 6-2 game. We were lucky to win."
On Josh Langfeld ... "Langfeld is playing better both offensively and defensively. He is playing with more passion. He is battling out there. Last year, he got discouraged easily; this year, he is working through all that."
Senior Forward Josh Langfeld
On the effectiveness of the power play ... "The power play is doing a good job of moving the puck and getting the shots through. The simple things make the power play work. The defense is doing a good job getting the shots through, and the forwards are there with screens. It's a combination of everybody coming together."
On the feeling going into next weekend against Michigan State ... "There's a positive vibe. We know we haven't played our best game yet. We are playing with more hard work than skill and talent. We have to come to the rink and play hard for 60 minutes. Next weekend against Michigan State it won't be tough to have emotion for the whole game."
