Hesselink Named Conference Athlete of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan sophomore Ryan Hesselink (Freeport, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) has been named the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week for men's cross country, the league office announced Wednesday (Oct. 25).
Hesselink took second place overall at the Eastern Michigan Classic on Friday (Oct. 20), notching the top finish of his career. He was timed in 26:24 for the 8,000-meter course. There were no team scores kept at the meet.

This marks the third time a Michigan harrier has been named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week this season. Junior Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./Naperville HS) won the award twice, on Sept. 26 and Oct. 10.
Hesselink and the Wolverines will travel to Madison, Wis., this weekend for the Big Ten Championships. The men's 8,000-meter race starts at 11:30 CST on Sunday (Oct. 29).
