Michigan Drops 5-1 Decision to Top-Ranked Notre Dame

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team closed out the 2000 home season with a hard-fought loss to top-ranked and undefeated University of Notre Dame on Tuesday (Oct. 24) at the U-M Soccer Field.
Much of the game was spent at midfield as both defenses provided strong coverage. Notre Dame posted the first goal at 16:27, when a shot from Monica Gonzalez got past freshman goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School), who finished the game with eight saves.
Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead into halftime after a goal from Mia Sarkensian at 39:56, and the Irish continued their scoring drive with two goals from Randi Scheller, at 47:45 and 67:37, to build a 4-0 lead.
Michigan got on the board at 74:54 with a goal from senior forward Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS), off a pass from senior midfielder Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS). Notre Dame's Amy Warner closed out the scoring with less than two minute to play for the final margin.
Michigan's goal was only the sixth goal allowed all season by Notre Dame, which has now outscored its opponents 57-6.
The Wolverines will close out the regular season as they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on Butler University on Sunday (Oct. 29) at Varsity Field.
