ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team lost a close, 2-1 match to No. 6-ranked Penn State Friday (Oct. 13) at the U-M Soccer Field. The Nittany Lions outshot the Wolverines 26-13 for the game, but Michigan did not give up and had a few scoring opportunities to tie the game toward the end of the contest.
Penn State (13-2-1, 7-0 Big Ten) scored first at the 32:15 mark when Heidi Drummond finished a two-on-one breakaway from 20 yards out, knocking the ball over senior goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat), who came out of goal to challenge the attack. Stewart was challenged most of the first half, making six saves before halftime. Michigan had a great chance to tie the game with 43:30 on the clock off a corner kick, but Penn State's Emily Oleksiuk made a goal-saving grab on the cross.
The Wolverines (7-6, 5-3 Big Ten) allowed a second goal at 54:07 on a strange corner kick by the Nittany Lions. Bonnie Young took the corner and put enough spin on the ball to bend it around the U-M defense and Stewart without anyone else touching the ball to increase the lead to 2-0.
Michigan's offensive attack then came alive as the final 20 minutes of the match were controlled by the Wolverines' offense. Freshman Amber Wilson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) got U-M on the board at 76:12, scoring off a setup by Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow), who put the ball in front of the goal on a header off a corner kick.
Michigan fans became excited when sophomore Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) had a breakaway and blasted a shot 25 yards out, but Oleksiuk made the save, knocking the ball over the top of the goal. The Wolverines had another opportunity to tie the match (86:45) when Beitel put a header over the goal off a nice crossing pass from Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS).
The Wolverines' next match is against Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 15, 1 p.m.) at the U-M Soccer Field in game one of a doubleheader, followed by the U-M men's team against Michigan State at 3:30 p.m.
