Wolverines Tie for Third at Northern Intercollegiate

URBANA, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team used a strong second day from junior Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) to move up 10 spots to finish tied for third at the Northern Intercollegiate at the Stone Creek Golf Club.
Matthews began the tournament by carding a first-round total of 77, but rebounded in the second round, shooting a career-best-tying 68 in the second round to spark the Wolverines. He finished with a 76 in the final round for a 221 and season-best tie for eighth place.
Michigan carded rounds of 305-294-298 for an 897 team total. The Wolverines tied with Indiana for the third spot after the Hoosiers tallied team totals of 293-302-302 for their 897 total.
Purdue finished as the Intercollegiate champion after the Boilermakers carded team rounds of 291-298-300 for an 889 team total. Iowa was the runner-up (298-291-301/893). Penn State's Matt Abbott took individual medalist honors after rounds of 70-71-74 for a 215 total. Marshall's Aaron Williams (72-74-73), Miami of Ohio's Lee Curry (71-73-75) and Xavier's Tim Smith (70-73-76) all finished at 219 to tie for second place.
As for the rest of the Wolverines, senior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) tied for 17th after rounds of 78-72-75 for a 225 total. Redshirt freshman Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) tied for 21st after carding rounds of 77-77-72 for a 226 total. Freshman David Nichols (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) opened the Intercollegiate with a career-best 73 but fell off in the last two rounds, firing an 80 in the second and a 75 in the third for a 228 total and a 34th-place finish. Junior Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) tied for 54th (78-77-77/232).
The Wolverines will continue their fall season with a trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, to defend their team title at the Xavier Invitational, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 9-10). Michigan took home the 1999 team title with an 865 team total at the Golf Center at Kings Island, good for a two-stroke win over Marshall.

-- Junior Andy Matthews carded a career-best-tying 68 in the second round of the Northern Intercollegiate. The last time he fired a 68 was last season in the second round of the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 11-12, 1999). In addition, Matthews' tie for eighth place at the Northern Intercollegiate was a season-best finish and was the first time he led the Wolverines since the Silver Springs Shores Invitational (March 11-12, 2000).
-- Freshman David Nichols made his collegiate debut at the Northern Intercollegiate and finished 34th after carding rounds of 73-80-75 for a 228 total.
-- The Wolverines' second-round team total of 294 at the Northern Intercollegiate was their second best of the season.
