150th Consecutive Crowd over 100,000
The Michigan-Rice football game marked the 150th consecutive crowd of over 100,000 people in Michigan Stadium. Today's attendance was 110,501.
Career Day for Walker
Sophomore receiver Marquise Walker (Syracuse, N.Y./Henniger HS) set a personal career single-game highs with 5 receptions, 59 yards receiving and a long play of 21 yards. Previously his career highs were 1 reception for 18 yards vs. Notre Dame in 1998. Walker also blocked a punt at 4:52 of the third quarter.
Henson Completes 34-Yarder, Runs for TD
Sophomore quarterback Drew Henson (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) set a personal record for longest completion when he connected with sophomore wide receiver David Terrell (Richmond, Va./Huguenot HS) for 34 yards late in the first quarter. His previous longest pass was 32 yards vs. Eastern Michigan in 1998. Henson scored his second career rushing touchdown on a 1-yard dive at 12:46 of the second quarter. Henson threw his fourth career touchdown pass, a 14-yard strike, to Terrell in the second quarter.
Wolverines Win Turnover Battle Again
• For the second straight game, Michigan was turnover-free. The Wolverines forced three Rice turnovers -- one fumble and two interceptions -- and blocked a punt after recording three take-aways from Notre Dame in their first game.
• Junior free safety DeWayne Patmon (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry HS) made his sixth career interception (first of the season) in the second quarter. He leads all active Wolverine players with six interceptions.
• Senior/junior outside linebacker Grady Brooks (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) made his first career fumble recovery, at the Rice 46-yard line in the third quarter.
• Sophomore/junior cornerback Cato June (Washington D.C./Anacostia HS) made his first career interception in the fourth quarter.
Terrell Collects First TD Catch of 1999
Sophomore wide receiver David Terrell caught his first touchdown pass of the season (second career) in the second quarter on a 14-yard pass from Drew Henson. Terrell had his first career rushing attempt when he ran for six yards in the second quarter.
Frosh See First Action
• Freshman kicker Phil Brabbs (Midland, Mich./Dow HS) made his Wolverine debut by kicking off at 9:04 of the third quarter and then made the tackle.
• Freshman wide receiver Ronald Bellamy (New Orleans, La./Archbishop Shaw HS) made his Wolverine debut returning a kickoff 23 yards in the third quarter.
• Freshman running back B.J. Askew (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) had his first carry as a Wolverine, in the third quarter.
• Freshman running back Charles Drake (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester HS) made his debut and caught a five-yard pass from Drew Henson.
Touchdown Thomas
Junior tailback Anthony Thomas (Winnfield, La./Winnfield HS) had his fourth straight game with multiple touchdowns. Thomas scored two third-quarter touchdowns, giving him four for the season and 24 in his career. Thomas has scored 11 touchdowns in his last four games. Thomas gained 87 yards on 21 carries, moving him up to the 25th spot on the Wolverines all-time rushing list, with 1,665 yards.
Tough Defense
• Michigan's defense did not allow Rice to cross the 50-yard line until 3:28 in the fourth quarter.
• Rice was 1-of-13 on third-down conversions.
• The Owls were 1-of-4 passing for 15 yards and 2 interceptions.
• Michigan's defense had 10 tackles for lost yardage. Senior defensive tackle Josh Williams (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek HS) had three tackles for -12 yards, including a sack for -6 yards, and forced a fumble.
Del Verne Has Another Busy Day
Senior/junior place kicker Jeff Del Verne scored 13 points today. He was 3-of-3 on field goals (24, 38, 30) and added four extra points. The 38-yard field goal is a career long. He leads Anthony Thomas in team scoring, 27 points to 24, after two games.
