U-M Athletic Director Tom Goss Statement
Regarding Detroit Free Press Story of May 13
"We are concerned that former University of Michigan basketball players may be linked to an outside party implicated in an FBI investigation. Although we have taken strong steps in the last two years to shield athletes from this particular individual, we will examine whether more needs to be done.
"We recognize and remind our athletes that they are held to the highest standards of integrity. Hundreds of our student-athletes consistently abide by the rules and reflect the values the University cherishes.
"We are cooperating fully with the FBI, which has bound us to confidentiality until its inquiry is completed. While we do not yet know all of the details, the FBI has assured us that no member of the current coaching staff is involved in this issue and that the investigation to date does not suggest any gambling or improper activity tied to basketball games.
"Should we at any time learn that anyone currently associated with Michigan is implicated in the investigation, we will take swift action.
"This is an extremely serious matter, and we are putting the highest priority on it. What we do guarantee, however -- and especially to those who so strongly support Michigan -- is that I will make the integrity of intercollegiate athletics foremost, as I have done since I became Athletic Director. We will vigiliantly pursue this issue to a proper resolution, and we will not rest until every possible safeguard is in place to protect the University and its athletic program against any person who attempts to operate outside the rules."
