WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team stands in 10th place after Friday's (April 30) first-day action at the 1999 Big Ten Conference Championships. Playing Purdue University's par-72, 5,949-yard Kampen Course, the Wolverines carded rounds of 334 and 331 for a 665 total that puts them four shots behind ninth-place Penn State (661).
Sophomore Amy Talbot (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) led the Wolverines with a 165 total (82-83) and a 31st-place standing in the 66-player field. Sophomore Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS) is tied for 32nd place at 166, one shot back of Talbot. Watkins followed an opening-round 87 with a seven-over-par 79, her first sub-80 round of the spring season and Michigan's top score of the day.
Ohio State posted the two lowest team rounds of the day (310, 313) to lead the 11-team event with a 36-hole total of 623, seven strokes ahead of defending champion Indiana (630). The middle of the pack is tightly bunched, with just seven shots separating third place from seventh.
Ohio State's Amber Amstutz holds the first-day individual lead after rounds of 74 and 75 for a five-over-par 149 total. She is one shot ahead of 1998 co-medalist Erin Carney of Indiana, who shot back-to-back 75s.
The 72-hole tournament continues on Saturday and Sunday (May 1-2), with 18 holes each day.
