Amelkovich, Jansen Merit Big Ten Medal of Honor

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior student-athletes Beth Amelkovich (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East HS) and Jon Jansen (Clawson, Mich./Clawson HS), outstanding students in the classroom and top competitors in their sports, have been selected as recipients of the 1998-99 Michigan Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor.
The Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor is presented annually to the graduating male and female student-athlete at each conference member institution who have attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship, service and athletics. Amelkovich and Jansen will be honored during the Michigan Athletic Department's Academic Achievement Awards Banquet April 6.
A member of the Wolverine women's gymnastics squad, Amelkovich is enrolled in the University's Division of Kinesiology, carrying majors in physical education and sports management/communication. She is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and earned 1997 GTE Academic All-America Fall/Winter At-Large Third-Team accolades and GTE Fall/Winter At-Large Academic All-District IV 1997 and 1999 citations. The National Association of Gymnastics Coaches of America/Women awarded Amelkovich national All-Scholastic awards in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Amelkovich has been involved as a peer advisor with M-PACT and assisted with the student-athlete sponsored Sober Sensation and Martin Luther King Jr. Day presentations.
As an all-around competitor, Amelkovich has competed in two NCAA Women's Gymnastics National Championships, winning NCAA All-America First-Team balance beam honors in 1997 and All-America Second-Team citations in the all-around (1997) and balance beam (1996). At the Big Ten Conference Championships, Amelkovich has won individual titles in balance beam (1997) and all-around (1996) competitions and helped U-M to three Big Ten championships (1996, '97, '99).
Only the ninth person to serve two seasons as captain of the Michigan football team, offensive lineman Jansen is completing studies in the Division of Kinesiology as a sports management and communications major. He is a 1998 GTE Academic All-America Second-Team award recipient, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree, and winner of a 1998 Burger King Scholar-Athlete award.
Jansen capped his collegiate playing career with selection to the Burger King/American Football Coaches Association All-America First-Team and Associated Press All-America Third-Team. The conference coaches selected Jansen, who captured All-Big Ten honors as a junior and senior, as the league's Offensive Lineman of the Year in 1998. Jansen set the Wolverine record with 50 career starts, earning four varsity letters as a four-year starter at right tackle. He was a member of Michigan's 1997 Associated Press National Championship team and helped the Wolverines to the 1997 and 1998 Big Ten Conference titles.
