SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team claimed top honors over four other teams, including top-ranked Penn State, at the Gold's Gym Invitational on Saturday (March 6) in the University of California-Santa Barbara Events Center. With a 226.400 team score, the Wolverines beat out No. 1 Penn State (223.950), No. 13 California (223.400), No. 19 UCSB (214.825) and Washington (191.750).
Freshman Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) won the all-around event with a new team season high of 57.600. Junior LaLo Haro (Puebla, Pue., Mexico/Instituto Iberia) followed behind his teammate for a second-place finish (56.850), and California's Alex Nissen took third with a 56.650.
Diaz-Luong contributed to his all-around score with first-place finishes on the vault (a personal-best 9.650) and the high bar (9.750). He also took second on the pommel horse (9.700) and the parallel bars (9.550). Haro received first-place honors on the vault (9.650) and the high bar (9.750), while freshman Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) placed second on the still rings, matching his personal best of 9.650.
The Wolverines return to action on Sunday (March 14) when they host Michigan State at 1 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
