ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team overtook No. 7 Michigan State on the final two events to down the Spartans Sunday (March 14) in the Wolverines' Alumni and Senior meet in Cliff Keen Arena. The Blue Tumblers posted a season-high team score of 230.400 to defeat the Spartans (229.300) for the second time this season. U-M upped its record to 12-5 overall and 6-5 against Big Ten opponents, while the Spartans fell to 5-10 and 3-7.
Junior LaLo Haro (Puebla, Pue., Mexico/Instituto Iberia) won the all-around with a new season-high score of 57.575, while freshman Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) followed close behind with a 57.225 score for a second-place finish. Freshman Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) claimed third (56.925), which included a win on the pommel horse with a new career high of 9.850.
Sophomore co-captain Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) took two first-place finishes in the individual events for the Wolverines. Toman recorded a career high on the high bar with a winning score of 9.800 and took top honors on the parallel bars with another 9.800. Vetere claimed first on the still rings with a 9.900.
After four events, Michigan State held a slim 153.500-153.425 lead over Michigan, but the Wolverines dominated the final two apparatus to take the win. Led by Toman, U-M claimed the top four spots on the parallel bars and four of the top six on the high bar to pull ahead of the Spartans.
Randy D'Amura (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's Academy), the lone Wolverine senior, competed for the last time in Cliff Keen Arena as a Michigan gymnast.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday (March 20) at 7 p.m., when they travel to East Lansing for a co-ed meet against Michigan State.
