Wolverines at Their Best in Win Over Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The fifth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team outscored sixth-ranked Michigan State 231.850-229.925 on Saturday (March 20) at the Spartans' Jenison Field House in the teams' final tune-up for the Big Ten Championships. The Wolverines topped their team season high for the second straight week, and U-M won even though the Spartans registered their highest meet score in school history.
Junior LaLo Haro (Puebla, Pue., Mexico/Instituto Iberia) was a major contributer to the Wolverines' score with his own career-best performance in the all-around. Haro beat his all-around career high of 57.800 from the California Invitational with a first-place score of 58.000. Freshmen Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) and Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) also posted career-high all-around scores in finishing second (57.875) and third (57.600), respectively.
Sophomore co-captain Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) was a strong competitor for Michigan in the individual events with a tie for first place with Haro on the floor exercise (9.800) and a second-place finish on the parallel bars (9.800). Haro, along with his win on the floor exercise, was also the champion of the vault event (9.800). Vetere also made his mark in the individual events, claiming first place on the parallel bars and second on the pommel horse with a new career-high score of 9.875 on both events. Sophomore Kenny Keener (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville HS) won first place on the still rings with a personal-best score of 9.875.
The Wolverines will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Big Ten Championships on Friday and Saturday (March 26-27).
