Second-Ranked Wolverines Defeated by No. 4 Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The second-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team was edged out by fourth-ranked Iowa on Saturday (Feb. 27) in the Hawkeyes' Field House North Gym. The Wolverines' team total of 227.950 fell short of the Iowa's 228.450, leaving Michigan with a 7-5 record.
The Wolverines took top honors on the parallel bars with a team score of 38.200 to the Hawkeyes' 37.225. The Blue Tumblers also won on the still rings with a new season best of 38.550 team points and attained another season high with a 38.300 floor exercise score.
Hawkeye junior Todd Strada claimed first place in the all-around with a 57.750. U-M junior LaLo Haro (Puebla, Pue. Mexico/Instituto Iberia) followed Strada with a 55.600, which included a fourth-place tie on the high bar (9.300). Freshman Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) finished fourth in the all-around with a 54.250.
Sophomore co-captain Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) led Michigan in individual events with first-place honors on the floor exercise (9.825) and on the high bar (9.700). Toman also received second- and third-place honors on the parallel bars (9.725) and the pommel horse (9.750), respectively.
Sophomore Kenny Keener (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville HS) won the still ring event with a new career high of 9.850. Freshman Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) was also a major contributor for the Wolverines with a first-place honor on the vault (9.550) and tie for third on the floor exercise (9.650). Both of these scores are new career highs for Kenna.
The Wolverines return to action at the Santa Barbara Invitational on Saturday (March 6) at 7 p.m. PST in Santa Barbara, Calif.
