ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The second-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team dominated 10th-ranked Massachusetts at Cliff Keen Arena on Saturday (Feb. 20). The Wolverines won with a team score of 229.275, the top team score under the direction of third-year head coach Kurt Golder, while UMass totaled 220.150 points in the dual meet. Michigan ups its record to 7-4 with the non-conference win.
The pommel horse proved to be Michigan's strongest event as the Wolverines scored a team season high of 38.850 to Massachusetts' 35.450. The Maize and Blue tumblers also recorded a season high on the floor exercise (38.100), contributing to the team season-best total of 229.275, which bettered the 228.475 U-M scored vs. Illinois-Chicago (Jan. 23).
Freshman Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) claimed top honors in the all-around with a personal-best score of 56.950. Consistency was a critical factor in Vetere's new score as he led the team with new career highs on the pommel horse (9.850) and the vault (9.700) for first-place finishes.
Junior LaLo Haro (Puebla, Pue. Mexico/Instituto Iberia) followed Vetere in the all-around with a personal best of 56.600, tying Minuteman junior Jeff LaVallee for second place. Massachusetts senior Steve Pryor took fourth with 54.400 points.
Sophomore captain Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) led Michigan in individual events with first-place honors on the floor exercise (9.750), parallel bars (9.825) and high bar (9.725). Toman beat his personal best on the floor exercise and tied his best on the pommel horse. Sophomore Kenny Keener (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville HS) won the still rings event with a 9.650.
Freshman Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) increased his personal best score in three out of the five events in which he competed. Diaz-Luong went from a 9.500 to a 9.550 on still rings for second place, from a 9.600 to a 9.625 on vault for third, and from 9.625 to 9.750 on parallel bars for second. Diaz-Luong also matched his career high on the pommel horse with a 9.750 that was good for a second-place finish.
The Wolverines return to action next Saturday (Feb. 27) when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to face the Iowa Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. CST.
