LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Five members of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the Winter Cup Challenge on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 12-13).
Sophomore co-captain Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS), junior Ethan Johnson (Chevy Chase, Md./Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School) and three freshmen -- Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS), Josh Levin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West HS) and Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) -- participated in this seasonal meet, which is used to fill three open positions on the U.S. National Team.
Three of the five gymnasts qualified for the second day by scoring in the top 36 on Friday. Diaz-Luong finished in 13th at the end of the first day with an all-around score of 51.500. Vetere claimed 33rd place, while Levin took 36th. The scores from the first day did not roll over to the second.
On Saturday, Diaz-Luong finished 18th with a 51.050, including a second-place honor on the vault (9.500). Vetere took third on the vault (9.450) and scored a 49.750 in the all-around for 25th place, while Levin followed directly behind with a 49.700 for a 26th-place finish.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday (Feb. 20) when they host Massachusetts at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
