"We are delighted for Rob and the things he has achieved on the football field and in the classroom," Carr added. "He was selected by his teammates as a captain to lead and he has done that both on the field and in the academic arena. I think he epitomizes the word student-athlete. He is everything that you want from a football player and a young man."
Renes became the third Wolverine and first defensive player to earn All-America honors on the field and in the classroom during the same year. He joins receiver Jim Mandich (1969), the school first double honor recipient, and offensive guard Stefan Humphries (1983), who was also a first team Academic All-American in 1982. Renes, a second team Academic All-American in 1998, and Humphries both earned National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame post-graduate scholarships as seniors.

The only four-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference football player in Michigan history, Renes maintains a 3.55 cumulative grade point average in a dual major of German and social studies. He is a three-time GTE Academic All-District IV selection and is a two-time recipient of the Dr. Arthur Robinson Student-Athlete Award, given annually to the top Michigan football student-athlete.
Renes is one of 15 senior football players being honored at the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame's 42nd Annual Award Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City tonight.
Renes led the No. 8-ranked Wolverines to a 9-2 regular-season record and a matchup with No. 5 Alabama in the FedEx Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.
