Shakespeare Leads the Way at Texas Invitational

Leading the way for the Wolverines was senior All-American Shannon Shakespeare (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kelvin SS), who turned in a team-high four top-10 efforts in individual events. Shakespeare placed first in the 100-meter freestyle on Sunday with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 55.10. She finished second in the 50-meter freestyle (25.47) and eighth in the 200-meter individual medley (2:18.49) on Friday. On Saturday, she turned in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:58.89 in the 200-meter freestyle to finish third.
Also on Friday, Shakespeare set a Texas Invitational record in the 200-yard individual medley preliminaries with a time of 1:59.72 to break the previous record set in 1993 by Jenny Thompson of Stanford.
Junior All-American Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS) placed in the top 10 in three individual events, including a second-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke (1:00.99) on Saturday. Her other two top performances were in the 100-meter freestyle on Sunday, in which she finished eighth, and the 50-meter freestyle on Friday, in which she was ninth.
The remaining top individual performances were turned in by a freshman trio and a sophomore duo. In the 200-meter backstroke finals on Sunday, freshman Erin Abbey (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield HS) turned in a time of 2:13.27 and sophomore Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) finished in 2:14.67 to place fifth and eighth, respectively.
Freshman Jenay Karlson (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) was seventh in the 1,650-meter freestyle, and freshman Traci Valasco (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) finished 10th in the 200-meter breaststroke on Sunday. On Saturday, sophomore Andrea Kurrle (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro HS) finished 10th in the 400-meter individual medley to close out the top individual efforts.
The relay events on Friday saw a Michigan relay team of Crisman, All-American Melissa Sugar (Newburgh, Indiana/Evansville Day School), Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) and Shakespeare finish fifth in the 200-meter freestyle relay in addition to a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay from a team of Crisman, Valasco, Carlberg and Shakespeare. Saturdays 200-meter medley relay team of Abbey, Kurrle, Valasco and Sugar finished seventh. And on Sunday, the 400-meter freestyle relay team of Shakespeare, Sugar, Crisman and Kaznecki turned in a time of 3:45.76 to finish fourth.
The next meet for the Wolverines is Thursday, Dec. 30, vs. the University of Indianapolis in Tampa, Fla.
