Brady Named MVP to Highlight 1999 U-M Football Awards

Brady, who led Michigan to comeback wins vs. Notre Dame, Indiana, Penn State and Ohio State this season, enters bowl action having completed 180 of 295 attempts (.610) in 1999 for 2,217 yards and 16 touchdowns. Brady threw at least one scoring pass in each of his 16 Big Ten career starts.
Senior/junior offensive tackle Jeff Backus (Norcross, Ga./Norcross HS), who has made 36 consecutive starts, was named winner of the HUGH H. RADER JR. MEMORIAL AWARD as Michigan's top offensive lineman.
Senior Ian Gold (Belleville, Mich./Belleville HS), Michigan's tackle leader for the regular season, was named winner of the ROGER ZATKOFF AWARD as Michigan's top linebacker. Gold enters Michigan's bowl game with 83 tackles (62 solo) on the season.
Senior inside linebacker Dhani Jones (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS), third on the team with 72 tackles (50 solo), was named winner of the DR. ARTHUR D. ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARD as the leading student-athlete on the football team. A pre-med major, Jones is enrolled in Michigan's prestigious Residential College.
Senior tri-captain nose tackle Rob Renes (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) was named winner of the DICK KATCHER AWARD as the outstanding Wolverine defensive lineman. Renes, who will make consecutive start number 37 in the bowl game, is the first four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection in Michigan history.
Senior wide receiver Marcus Knight (Sylacauga, Ala./Comer HS) was named winner of the ROBERT P. UFER BEQUEST. The Ufer Bequest is awarded to the senior football player who demonstrates the most enthusiasm and love for Michigan. Knight, who made the game-winning touchdown reception at Penn State, ranks second on the team with 36 receptions for 766 yards heading into bowl action.
