Wolverines Fall to Lakers in First Home Loss of Season
11/19/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
The game was physical from the start, with Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) taking the game's first penalty just 1:19 into the first period. The teams combined for 98 penalty minutes on 34 penalties in the game.
Lake Superior's Jeremy Bachusz led the Lakers with three points on two goals and one assist. His first goal opened the scoring midway though the first period. After a routine dump-in to the Wolverines zone, Bachusz came in from the right wing and stole the puck from goalie Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and flipped the puck into the open net, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Bachusz's second goal came early in the second period on a 2-on-1 break. Laker left winger Mike Vigilante skated in on O'Malley and wristed a shot from inside the left circle. O'Malley made the initial stop, but Bachusz picked up the rebound at the top of the slot and fired the puck into the net, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Just over four minutes later, Baschusz fed Jason Nightingale in the right circle, and Nightingale beat O'Malley to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead after two periods.
Even though Michigan was held scoreless, the Wolverines had numerous chances thoughout the contest. In the first period Michigan failed to capitalize on a two-minute 5-on-3 advantage when Lake Superior's Ryan Knox and Trent Walford each took penalties at the 17:19 mark. In the third period, the Wolverines came close to scoring, but John Shouneyia's (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) shot from the right circle hit the far post and deflected to the far boards. In the game, Michigan outshot the Lakers 40-20, including an 18-5 advantage in the third period.
O'Malley suffered his second loss of the season and now holds a record of 8-2-0. He made 12 saves and allowed three goals. Backup L.J. Scarpace (Dearborn, Mich.) played the third period and made five saves in just under 20 minutes of play. Lake Superior's Jayme Platt made 40 saves in the win to improve his record to 4-3-0 on the season.
The Wolverines and Lakers will face off again tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 20) at Yost Ice Arena, starting at 7:05 p.m. Michigan will be without the services of junior Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.), who received a game disqualification in the third period after a fight with Lake Superior's Chris Thompson, who also received a game disqualification.

Head Coach Red Berenson
On the team's play ... "We did some things to hurt ourselves. We took early penalties, we got ourselves behind the eight ball, we gave up a bad goal and we missed our chances. Certainly we gave them an opportunity to win the game, and then we couldn't take it away from them."
On the Michigan playing out of sync ... "There are nights when the passion is off, the shots are off and you're just out of sync. That's how our team played. Obviously, you don't do that by design. Everyone comes to the rink ready to play, and then things happen in the game. It doesn't go your way, and that's the kind of game it was."
On regrouping after this loss ... "We have to feel that we're a better team than that. We've shown that in almost every night we've played (to this point). Of course, they're going to come in and try to keep us from playing well. We just have to believe in ourselves, we have to stick together, we have to stick with what got us here and we have to regroup because we have another game tomorrow night. I don't like it, our team doesn't like it, but it's not the end of the world. We just have to bounce back tomorrow night."
Defenseman and Captain Sean Peach
On the team playing out of sync ... "It was frustrating. We had a slow start. After that first goal, we really didn't get things going. Our power play wasn't clicking at all. Our special teams have got to help us out, especially when they're calling so many penalties."
On being ready to play tomorrow night ... "It's a new day tomorrow. We have to forget about this game we had tonight and prepare like we normally do. We need to be more mentally ready for this team."
