Renes Named to GTE Academic All-District IV Team

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior nose tackle Rob Renes (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) is among the 26 players named to the GTE Academic All-District IV First Team for football as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Renes, nose tackle and co-captain for the Wolverine football team, is a third-year district award winner and advances to the GTE Academic All-America ballot. He was a member of the 1998 GTE Academic All-America Second Team.

Majoring in secondary education with teaching emphasis in German and social studies, Renes will become Michigan's first four-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree. He was named a National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete (postgraduate scholarship) in early November and is a nominee for the State of Michigan Chapter of the National Football Foundation scholar-athlete award. Renes has twice been presented the football team's Dr. Arthur Robinson Student-Athlete award.

On the field, Renes has helped the Wolverines to an 8-2 record (5-2 Big Ten) and a Top 20 national ranking. He has started all 10 games, totaling 40 tackles (32 solo, 8 assist), four tackles for loss and one sack. Expected to make 36th career start vs. Ohio State on Saturday (Nov. 20), Renes has been selected to All-Big Ten teams in each of the last two seasons (1997, '98).

Renes has been a participant in the Michigan Athletic Department's SHARE elementary school reading program. He is involved with the Ottawa County (Mich.) DARE program and has been an educational speaker at his high school alma mater, West Ottawa High School.

Members of the GTE Academic All-District IV team carry at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, are starters or important reserves, and are at least sophomores academically and athletically. District IV includes all colleges and universities within the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
