Johnson's Late Goal Downs Duke in NCAA First Round

The Wolverines (18-6) will face No. 3 Wake Forest, a 3-0 first-round winner over No. 9 James Madison, tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 14) in the second round. A win would send the Maize and Blue to the NCAA Final Four next weekend (Nov. 19-20) in Boston, Mass.
Duke (13-8) opened the scoring with 25:31 remaining in the first half on a penalty corner play, but that was all the Blue Devils would manage on the afternoon as the Wolverines' defense limited Duke to just three shots for the game.
Michigan scored its first goal on a penalty stroke by senior Ashley Reichenbach (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra HS) with 2:27 left in the first half. The play began as a penalty corner shot by Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) that was lofted and hit a Duke defender, thus resulting in a penalty stroke.
Michigan's second goal came late in the game on a deflection off of a corner shot by Johnson. Assists were awarded to junior Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield-Mount Hermon HS) and sophomore Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster School).
Michigan dominated the tempo of the game and held the ball inside Duke's offensive end, which resulted in a lopsided 15-2 advantage on penalty corner plays, and the Wolverines outshot the Blue Devils by a 14-3 count.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
"It was a fantastic match. We've never been to the NCAA Tournament and I was a little concerned about how we'd show up. It's nice to get this one behind us."
"I though we executed well today and so did [Duke]. That's what NCAA Tournament games are supposed to be like."
Senior Ashley Reichenbach
"It just feels great to go out there and play together and to be a part of (Michigan) history."
On holding Duke to two corner opportunities ... "Our team stepped up early and tried to make the plays outside the circle."
Freshman Stephanie Johnson
On the game-winning goal ... "I really felt like we had nothing to lose. We were playing well offensively, we just couldn't get any to fall. I stepped up there and whacked it like it owed me money."
On winning the first NCAA Tournament game in program history ... "Seeing the history of the program and what huge strides we've made the last couple of years, it's just another step in the progression."
