Wolverines Break Gophers' Hex, 2-0
Junior Kacy Beitel scored a goal and assisted on another as the Wolverines defeated the Gophers 2-0 in St. Paul, Minn. (Oct. 15). It marked the Michigan soccer team's first victory over Minnesota. Beitel scored her eighth goal of the season at 20:19 off a feed from Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS). At 21:01, Beitel assisted on Abby Crumpton's (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) eighth tally of the year. All-Big Ten candidate Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) played solid in net to record her fifth shutout of the season.
Wisconsin Upsets Michigan, 3-1
The Wisconsin Badgers (7-5-3, 3-5-2 Big Ten) upset Michigan 3-1 in Madison, Wis. (Oct. 17), spoiling Michigan's bid for its first-ever Big Ten regular-season title. The Gophers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) cut the deficit in half at 78:04 with her fourth goal of the season. The Wolverines could not capitalize on the change in momentum as the Badgers scored 2:09 later to regain a two-goal advantage.
Big Ten Recap
Penn State went 2-0 on the weekend to claim at least a tie of its second consecutive Big Ten title. The top six schools -- Penn State, Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Minnesota and Illinois -- have all clinched slots in the Big Ten Tournament (Nov. 5-7) with Michigan State and Wisconsin needing only a win or tie or an Indiana loss or tie to secure the final two slots. Purdue and Northwestern have been eliminated from the tournament.

Once Again ...
Goalkeeper Carissa Stewart became Michigan's single-season victories leader with a win over Minnesota (Oct. 15). Stewart is the only Wolverine goalie to win at least 10 games in a season, with 11 victories this year and 10 in 1997. Further, Stewart's 1471:35 minutes are the highest total played by a Michigan keeper in a season, while her 3816:14 career minutes are the second highest total by a Wolverine. She is on pace to break the career mark of 3896:16 (Jessica Jones, 1995-98) in the Butler game (Oct. 24).

Approaching 50
Senior All-Big Ten candidate Mari Hoff picked up a goal at Wisconsin (Oct. 17) to move her career total to 47 points. She needs just three more points to become the seventh Wolverine -- the third this season -- to top the 50-point mark. All-America candidate Emily Schmitt, 4-8-16 on the season, netted a goal at Northwestern (Oct. 10) to become the sixth Wolverine to eclipse the 50-point plateau with 52. All-Big Ten candidate Kacy Beitel, 8-3-19 on the year, recorded her 50th point earlier in the season and stands at 66 career points.
Schmitt, Hoff, Beitel Assisting Their Way to the Top
Senior All-America candidate Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) has collected eight helpers on the season, the second highest single-season assist mark in Michigan history. Schmitt has 14 assists for her career, one ahead of classmate Mari Hoff and two ahead of junior Kacy Beitel. Schmitt is just three assists behind Limauro for third on the school's all-time list. Amber Berendowsky holds the school records with 30 career assists and 17 assists in 1997.

Berendowsky in the Big Ten
Senior forward Amber Berendowsky's assist against Michigan State (Oct. 8) pushed her career total to 30, just one shy of the Big Ten record established by Penn State's Rachel Hoffman (1994-97). The assist moved Berendowsky's career point total to 106, just two shy of Penn State's Carole Dutchka (1995-98) for the third most points in conference history. With two goals this season, Berendowsky has 38 for her career, tied with Jennifer Walek of Minnesota (1994-96) for the fifth-highest total in Big Ten history.
Beitel Turns It On
Junior All-Big Ten candidate Kacy Beitel scored a goal and an assist at Minnesota (Oct. 15) to give her 6-3-15 in her last nine games. Despite missing time early in the season due to a hamstring injury, Beitel has established herself as Michigan's leading scorer with 19 points and eight goals, both tied with freshman Abby Crumpton. Her torrid stretch moved Beitel's career points total to 66, the third highest total in school history. The co-Big Ten Player of the Week for her performances Sept. 24-26, Beitel has game-winning goals at Minnesota, against Michigan State (Oct. 8), Purdue (Oct. 3) and in overtime against Utah (Sept. 12) while scoring the game-tying goal in Michigan's 2-1 overtime win against then-No. 15 Illinois (Sept. 24).

Consistent Crumpton
Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate Abby Crumpton continues to have a sensational freshman campaign. With just three more regular-season games remaining, Crumpton is tied for the team lead in points (19) and goals (eight) with junior Kacy Beitel. Crumpton is looking to become the first freshman to lead the Wolverines in scoring since 1996, when Mari Hoff paced the team with eight goals and Amber Berendowsky with 19 points. Beitel holds the school record for goal and points in a freshman season with 14 and 33 in 1997.
