U-M Field Hockey Destroys Michigan State, 5-0

It was an outstanding effort offensively and defensively for the Maize and Blue, which controlled every aspect of the game and outshot the Spartans 29-1. Michigan State didn't cross midfield until the halfway point of the first period.
While spending most of the first half in the Michigan State zone, the Wolverines started their onslaught at 21:12 with a Erica Widder (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) goal off a rebounded shot from Regan Wulfsberg (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown HS), who recorded the assist. Twenty-three seconds later, Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) knocked in a shot off a scrum at the front of the net, assisted by Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), who had two assists on the day to raise her season total to eight.
During the second half the Wolverines started where they left off in the first period as the team's leading scorer, Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield-Mount Hermon HS), put the ball in the net from a deep pass from Gannon for her eighth goal of the season.
The domination continued when Reid took a pass from Ali Balmer (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata HS) and set up Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS), who made a beautiful move that made the Spartan goaltender's head spin, scoring the fourth goal of the game at 24:17. Five minutes later, Veith added another spectacular goal, her fifth tally of the year, again assisted by Reid.
Defensively, the Wolverines were smothering, allowing just one shot to make it an easy day for goaltenders Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) and Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), who came in for relief at 19:02 of the second period. Oakes and Tasch did not have to attempt a save the entire game.
Michigan has won four consecutive games and nine of its last 10 and will return to action Friday (Oct. 22, 4 p.m.), traveling to Evanston, Ill., for a Big Ten matchup with Northwestern.
