Cantin Wins Wolverine Interregional, Leads U-M to Title

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In one of its most competitive races of the season, the 11th-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team won the Wolverine Interregional and defeated No. 8 James Madison by 18 points at the University of Michigan Golf Course Sunday morning (Oct. 17). The win marks Michigan's third consecutive title of the season.
Senior Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ontario/St. Clair SS) led the Wolverines with his overwhelming first-place finish for his second title of the season in as many weeks. Cantin took a commanding lead at the three-mile mark and continued to pull ahead for the remainder of the race. Crossing the finish line at 24:43, Cantin led the nearest competitor by approximately 100 yards.
The Wolverines held strong and placed all point scorers in the top 20. Senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) finished third with a time of 24:57, three seconds shy of second place. Sophomore Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) followed in fourth at 25:08. Junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) placed seventh with a time of 25:14 and junior John Butsic (Iron River, Mich./West Iron Country HS) rounded out the scoring places at 19th with a time of 25:41.
Today's meeting with James Madison was the Wolverines' second this season. The first meeting was Sept. 18 at the Spiked Shoe Invitational, where the Dukes won the title and defeated Michigan by 14 points to put the Wolverines in third place.
The men will continue their season next Friday (Oct. 22) at the Eastern Michigan University Open in Ypsilanti, Mich., at 4 p.m.
