Michigan and Ohio State Battle to Tie in Columbus
1/23/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Michigan opened the scoring in the second period when Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) skated down the right side along the boards and passed to Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta), who tipped the puck over OSU goaltender Jeff Maund's left shoulder for his team-leading 13th goal of the season.
The Wolverines (17-5-3, 14-3-2 CCHA) held the lead until Jestadt's soft shot from three feet in front of the crease found its way through Josh Blackburn's (Choctaw, Okla.) five hole at the 18:50 mark of the final period.
In addition to Blackburn's 25 saves, the Wolverines tied a season high by stopping all eight Buckeye power plays, including a full minute of 3-on-5 split between the second and third periods. The solid defensive effort helped the Wolverines to their 100th consecutive game in which they have won or tied after leading going into the final period (98-0-2).
Blackburn's record now stands at 17-4-3, while Maund, who stopped 29 shots in the loss, is now 12-8-4 for Ohio State (13-10-4, 11-6-3 CCHA).
Michigan takes on intrastate rival Michigan State in a battle of the top two team in the CCHA standings next Friday (Jan. 29) at Munn Arena in East Lansing. Game time is 7 p.m.
