Michigan Takes Third at Windy City Open

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team opened the season with a strong performance at the Windy City Open, hosted by the University of Illinois at Chicago. In a field of seven nationally ranked contenders, the Wolverines received third-place honors and finished ahead of sixth-ranked Illinois.
Top-ranked Iowa won its sixth Windy City championship with a 226.675 team score, finishing ahead of runnerup No. 3 Ohio State (225.000). Following Michigan's third-place finish (224.050) were No. 6 Illinois, No. 12 (tie) Michigan State, No. 17 UIC and No. 12 (tie) Minnesota.
Freshman Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) debuted with an outstanding performance, finishing fifth in the all-around (56.100), which included fifth place on pommel horse (9.65). Fellow freshman Scott Vetere (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown HS) contributed a 55.900 in the all-round for sixth place, including a second-place honor on the parallel bars (9.65).
Jose "LaLo" Haro (Puebla, Pue. Mexico/Instituto Iberia), a junior all-around competitor, contributed a 9.70 for second on the vault and a 9.45 for third on the parallel bars.
The Wolverines' next meet will be next Saturday (Jan. 23) against No. 17 Illinois-Chicago. Cliff Keen Arena will house Michigan's home opener at 7 p.m.
