ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team defeated Illinois-Chicago Saturday night (Jan. 23) by a score of 228.475 to 219.700 in front of 651 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. It marked the second time in two weeks the Wolverines, 5-2 on the season, have defeated the Flames.
Michigan was led by freshman Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bixhop McDevitt HS), who finished first in the all-around standings (56.950). His all-around total included first-place finishes on the pommel horse (9.750) and the vault (9.600).
Also a strong competitor for the Wolverines was freshman Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS), who claimed first on the floor exercise (9.600) and parallel bars (9.775) and recorded a second-place all-around finish (55.975).
The Wolverines beat out the Flames for the top four places of the pommel horse, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Sophomore Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lymann Hall HS) had an outstanding first-place performance on the horizontal bar with a career-high score of 9.850.
The Wolverines return to action on Friday (Jan. 29) when they host No. 3 Ohio State and No. 6 Illinois in the BMG Showdown at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
