ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan's Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) scored four minutes into overtime to give the eighth-ranked Wolverines a 2-1 victory over Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams. U-M improved to 7-2 overall, while the Spartans fell to 2-5.
The Wolverines got on the board early with Loveita Wilkinson's (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) fourth goal of the season just 2:25 into the game. Michigan continued to pepper Michigan State goalie Amy Ortwein but was unable to put the ball in the net during the rest of regulation.
The game featured two solid defenses and several momentum shifts. Michigan controlled the play in the first half and the early parts of the second, but momentum shifted toward the Green and White midway through the second half. With 14:01 to play in regulation, the Spartans tied the game on a penalty-corner goal by Marleen Tuip. Each team had several opportunities during the remainder of regulation, but solid goal tending at each end kept the score tied 1-1.
Michigan regained momentum heading into overtime, and 4:01 minutes into the extra period, Gannon scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Maize and Blue the victory.
"We didn't bring our 'A' games today," said Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "We had 16 (penalty) corners and we should have scored on more of them. We scored on enough though. The Big Ten is an extremely tough conference and we have to play well every game."
The Wolverines will have two days off before a noon game against the Louisville Cardinals Sunday (Sept. 27) at Ocker Field.

1st -- U-M, Loveita Wilkinson, 32:35 (Courtney Reid, Lindsay Babbitt)

The goal by Kelli Gannon was her second career overtime goal and second game-winner of the season. With the victory, the Wolverines evened the all-time series with Michigan State at 20-20-6.
