LOOKING TO THE WEEK AHEAD
The Michigan women's soccer team will take to the road for three games this week. The Wolverines take on Washtenaw County rival Eastern Michigan University before beginning the rigorous Big Ten season. Here is a look at this week's opponents:
Eastern Michigan: The Eagles and the Wolverines will be meeting for the fourth time to decide bragging rights of Washtenaw County. Michigan holds a 3-0-0 edge in the series. The last meeting was a 5-1 U-M victory in 1997 at the Michigan Soccer Field.
Wisconsin: The Badgers and the Wolverines will be meeting for the seventh time. The all-time series record favors Wisconsin, which is 4-1-1 vs. Michigan. In last year's meeting in Ann Arbor, U-M picked up its first win ever against the Badgers in a 6-0 rout. This year Wisconsin is 1-3-0 with two of the losses to top-10 opponents. The Wolverines are 0-1-1 in Madison.
Northwestern: The Wildcats and the Wolverines will be meeting for the sixth time. The all-time series record favors Michigan, which is 4-1-0 vs. Northwestern. The two teams met twice last season. The first was a 5-3 U-M victory in Ann Arbor. The second meeting was the memorable 1-0 overtime victory which gave the Wolverines the 1997 Big Ten Conference Tournament championship in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Michigan is 2-0-0 in Evanston.
LOOKING BACK AT THE MICHIGAN CHALLENGE CUP
Michigan made its 1998 home debut a memorable one, dominating competition in the Michigan Challenge Cup. The Wolverines combined to outscore their two opponents 8-2 during the course of the weekend. Here is a look at the way the teams faired as well as highlights of the Michigan games:
Sept. 11 vs. Massachusetts: The Wolverines picked up their first win ever over the Minutewomen thanks in part to the efforts of Jessica Limauro (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) who had two goals and an assist on the day. Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) picked up her first collegiate goal. Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) had a three-point day and Shannon Poole (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) added the other goal.
Sept. 13 vs. Detroit: The Wolverines remained perfect on the season with a 3-1 victory over the Titans. The Wolverines received another two-goal performance from Jessica Limauro while Amber Berendowsky continued her assault on the Michigan record books, chipping in another goal. Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt.Ararat HS) and Jessica Jones (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) split their second game of the weekend. Both goalies carry perfect 2-0-0 records on the season.
BEST START
The 1998 Wolverines are off to the best start in the five year history of the program at 4-0-0. The previous best start was in 1997, when Michigan got off to a 2-0-0 start before falling to Massachusetts 2-1.
THE BIG 50
The Michigan women's soccer program and Debbie Belkin hit the magical number 50 mark over this past weekend. The Wolverines picked up the 50th win in the history of the program. In the process Belkin picked up win number 50 as the head coach at Michigan. The Wolverines in the five-year span are 50-29-7 (.617).
LIMAURO ON A TEAR
Jessica Limauro has gotten off to quite a start during her senior campaign. Limauro leads the team in points with 12 and goals with five. Nine of her 12 points came this weekend on four goals and an assist.
MICHIGAN SOCCER FIELD MILESTONE
The Wolverines moved within one victory of claiming their 20th victory at the Michigan Soccer Field. The home-field advantage has been quite evident at Michigan as the women's soccer team is 19-7-3 (.707) all-time at home. The first shot at win No. 20 will come Sept. 25 when Penn State comes to town.
BANGED-UP WOLVERINES
Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) returned to action for the first time this weekend from a knee injury. Stephanie McArdle (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet HS) and Alissa Shaw (West Carrollton, Ohio/West Carrollton HS) both were out of uniform with ankle injuries.
