Michigan Takes Win Over BGSU for Perfect Weekend
12/5/1998 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Having not played on Friday, the Falcons came out fast and came out hitting, setting the tone for the game. However, Michigan's penalty kill continued to perform well, stopping Bowling Green nine times in 10 chances. The Wolverines' power play struck twice, the first at the 17:31 mark of the opening period, when Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) netted his fourth goal of the season.
Michigan (11-2-2, 9-1-1 CCHA) held the 1-0 lead until Bowling Green's Mike Jones tied the game at the 4:02 mark of the second. Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) gave Michigan the lead again halfway through the second, netting a shot that was tipped to him from Sean Peach (Langley, B.C.) after a pass from Bobby Hayes (Westland, Mich.). However, the lead only lasted about three and a half minutes until Dan Price evened the score with five minutes to go in the period.
With the temperature rising in the arena and the intensity of the tie game building, the third period turned into a free-for-all after Michigan secured the lead in the first five minutes on goals by Mike Van Ryn (London, Ontario) and Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta). After Michigan took the 4-2 lead, there were 16 penalties for 32 minutes. In addition to the heat adding to the intensity of the game, fog started to appear about five minutes into the period. Although it was not enough to warrant any stoppages in play, it was noticeable from the stands.
To close out the game, Michigan scored a fifth goal with 52 seconds remaining as Sean Ritchlin (Conseco, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the weekend after his shot hit a defender in front of the net.
Michigan goalie Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) earned his 10th career win (10-1-1) by stopping 27 of 29 shots. In the loss, BGSU's Mike Savard stopped 30 of Michigan's 34 shots.
Michigan rounds out the conference schedule for the fall semester with a home game Friday (Dec. 11) against Northern Michigan before taking a two-week break. Game time is 7 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
