At last week's Big Ten Tournament in East Lansing, Mich., Oakes and the Big Ten's top-rated defense recorded a 2-0 shutout of Ohio State in the semifinals, giving Oakes a school-record-tying 7.5 shutouts this season. Michigan, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, lost to top-seeded Penn State 3-1 in the championship game.
The first Wolverine in school history to earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks (Sept. 8 and 15), Oakes is one of just two players who were three-time Big Ten Player of the Week honorees this year, joining Penn State's Dawn Lammey.
Oakes finished the year with a 1.13 goals against average and recorded 72 saves in 21 games. She allowed just 21 goals on 93 shots (.758 save percentage), yielding five fewer goals than her closest conference competitor, Jamie Smith of Penn State. The Wolverines were strong defensively all season as they recorded the third-best marks in school history in three categories: goals-against average (1.13), fewest goals allowed (22) and shutouts (8).
Michigan finished with an impressive 15-6 record and placed second behind Penn State in the conference regular season with a 7-3 record.
